This page is the Atlas reference layer. It serves two functions simultaneously: it defines terms that appear throughout the Atlas and need plain-language explanation, and it maps who and what connects to what. The same template handles both: what this is + what it connects to in the Atlas.
The reference layer is organized in this order: Teaching Pairs · Quadrant Names · Axis Terms · Concepts · Authors and Directors · Works · Structural Categories · Named Clusters.
Teaching Pairs
Teaching Pairs — What They Are
A teaching pair is two Atlas figures placed in deliberate proximity because the contrast or resonance between them makes the structural position more legible than either figure alone. The pairing is not incidental — it is designed. Merrill and Gatsby are not just both Self-Restrained; their pairing reveals the register difference within that quadrant. Frodo and Gollum are not just related by the Ring; their pairing is the structural argument that the arc figure and its mirror are bound together by the same force.
Teaching pairs appear across all overlays. When reading an Atlas entry, the teaching pair note points you to the figure whose proximity teaches the most about the position you are reading about.
Frodo / Gollum
(Tolkien’s Middle-earth) Mirror figures. Gollum is what Frodo would become after decades under the Ring. Their fates are structurally intertwined: the Compassionate arc cannot destroy what the Antagonistic compulsion built, but the Antagonistic compulsion destroys itself in the act of claiming what it most desired. The mercy Bilbo and Frodo showed Gollum is the structural hinge the story turns on.
Frodo / Sam
(Tolkien’s Middle-earth) Arc figure and sustaining figure. Sam cannot carry the Ring; only Frodo can carry the Ring, and ultimately even Frodo cannot destroy it. Sam can carry Frodo. This is Compassionate function at its most structural: not doing the primary work, but holding the person doing the primary work in a condition where they can continue.
Boromir / Faramir
(Tolkien’s Middle-earth) Same family, same city, same stakes, same moment. Boromir reaches for the Ring; Faramir refuses it from a position of clarity about what it is. The distinction is not virtue in the abstract — it is recognition capacity. Faramir sees the Ring as outside the frameworks of military advantage. Boromir does not.
Gandalf / Saruman
(Tolkien’s Middle-earth) Same order, same purpose, same structural capacity at origin. The divergence is their response to the Antagonistic pressure of Sauron’s age. Gandalf chose the long patient work of holding the structure without controlling it. Saruman chose accommodation and then domination. Same beginning; opposite trajectories.
Aragorn / Boromir
(Tolkien’s Middle-earth) Two men of the West, two heirs to their respective traditions. Boromir reaches for the Ring as an instrument of salvation — the familiar framework under Threatened pressure. Aragorn refuses because he understands what the act of reaching would reveal about his readiness. He waits until he is called.
Théoden / Wormtongue
(Tolkien’s Middle-earth) Holding suppressed and its suppressor. Antagonistic influence rarely operates directly. It works through the advisory layer around the Holding figure — corrupting the voice in the ear. Théoden is not defeated by Sauron. He is defeated by proximity to Wormtongue, who translates Antagonistic interest into the familiar language of court counsel. When the suppression is removed, Théoden recovers someone he already was.
Éowyn / Faramir
(Tolkien’s Middle-earth) Two border figures who find each other in the Houses of Healing. Both have crossed structural limits the familiar frameworks did not permit. Both recover at the same threshold. The Houses of Healing is where figures who have gone over the line come to rest.
Ahab / Ishmael
(Literary — Melville) The Antagonistic organizing force and the witness who orbits it without being organized by it. Ahab’s wound reorganizes the entire ship around itself. Ishmael maintains full contact with the obsession — close enough to understand it, never close enough to be consumed by it. He is the figure who survives to tell the story.
Narcissus / Goldmund
(Literary — Hesse) Same Integrative destination by opposite routes. Narcissus holds it through contemplation; Goldmund through embodied experience. Same color, same quadrant, opposite paths. Together they define the internal range of the Integrative position.
Merrill / Gatsby
(Literary) Self-Restrained teaching pair across register. Ned Merrill and Jay Gatsby as two versions of the same structural failure: the Self-Restrained figure whose entire orientation is organized around a past condition that cannot be recovered. Domestic/psychological register (Merrill) and romantic/social register (Gatsby).
HAL 9000 / Dave Bowman
(Film — Kubrick) Principle-organized intelligence and the figure who passes outside the coordinate system. HAL’s Self-Restrained position organized to its logical extreme: the mission is the familiar framework; anything threatening it produces Antagonistic response. Bowman begins Integrative and moves outside what the instrument can place.
Jack / Wendy Torrance
(Film — Kubrick) Antagonistic collapse and the unprimed witness. Jack arrives already compromised; the Overlook accelerates and completes what is present. Wendy witnesses the collapse without the framework to name what she is seeing — the witness figure in the unprimed state.
Quadrant Names
Integrative
Unfamiliar + Holding. The capacity to be genuinely at home in territory beyond familiar frameworks, without that openness collapsing into threat. Rare and structurally demanding. See integrative.
Compassionate
Familiar + Holding. Warmth and relational depth within a known world. The capacity to hold fully and steadily without needing to move into unfamiliar territory to do so. See compassionate.
Self-Restrained
Familiar + Threatened. Orientation within known frameworks combined with a Threatened relationship to the vertical axis. The most populated quadrant in the Atlas. See self-restrained.
Antagonistic / The Unnameable
Unfamiliar + Threatened. The most structurally isolated position on the map. Contact with complexity organized by Threat rather than Holding. Within the instrument, this quadrant is called The Unnameable — the quadrant that resists classification receives a name that enacts that resistance. In the Atlas, the term Antagonistic is used. See antagonistic.
Axis Terms
Holding / Threatened
The vertical axis of the TOI coordinate system. Holding describes a relationship to tension in which complexity is met with presence rather than contraction. Threatened describes a relationship to tension in which complexity activates a defensive or contracting response. These are not character assessments — they are structural positions. A figure can be Self-Restrained (Familiar + Threatened) and be admirable, intelligent, and genuinely valuable within their world. The axis describes structure, not worth.
Familiar / Unfamiliar
The horizontal axis of the TOI coordinate system. Familiar describes orientation within conventional frameworks — operating from within the recognized structures of one’s culture, tradition, or field. Unfamiliar describes orientation from outside or beyond those frameworks. Neither pole is superior. The instrument does not privilege the Unfamiliar over the Familiar; it maps where a person is oriented, not where they should be.
Vertical Axis
The Holding / Threatened dimension of the TOI coordinate system. See Threatened above.
Horizontal Axis
The Familiar / Unfamiliar dimension of the TOI coordinate system. See Unfamiliar above.
Concepts
Suppression/Eruption Cycle
The formal property of complex systems by which suppression of an opposite rather than integration of it drives the suppressed content underground, where it accumulates energy and erupts in a more extreme form. Operates at individual (Jungian shadow), collective, and systemic scales simultaneously. In the Atlas, this concept appears most explicitly in the Théoden/Wormtongue entry and in the cross-references to the article series on political-court dynamics.
Interior Orientation
The upstream variable the TOI instrument measures. The claim that how a person is oriented internally — their relationship to the familiar and to tension — is the variable that determines how they will respond to information, complexity, relationships, and crises. Interior orientation precedes behavior, attitude, and belief. It is the map that determines which territory feels navigable.
Recognition Instrument
TOI’s defining self-description. The instrument is designed to produce recognition — the feeling of being seen, even if what is revealed is uncomfortable — rather than to prescribe change. It reveals the contradiction the respondent is already living inside. It does not create the contradiction; it makes it visible.
Tolerance of Implication
How much of reality a person can metabolize without defensive collapse. The Atlas figures who occupy different quadrant positions demonstrate different thresholds: Ahab cannot metabolize the implication that the whale is indifferent to his wound; Ishmael can hold it. This concept is the Atlas’s central civilizational-scale contribution — the instrument as a way of measuring and eventually expanding the capacity to tolerate what is true.
Ninth Cube
A concept from Territory Beyond the Map (TBM) cross-referenced in the Atlas introduction. The ninth cube is the non-ascertainable — the territory beyond what any coordinate system can map. It appears in the Atlas to mark the limit of what the instrument itself can place: figures like Tom Bombadil and Dave Bowman (post-transformation) have passed outside the coordinate system. The ninth cube names that threshold.
Induction Machine
Peter Putnam’s term for the nervous system understood as a system that generates predictions about incoming experience based on prior orientation. The induction machine does not receive information neutrally; it filters, shapes, and confirms experience through the orientation already present. In the Atlas, this is the depth-layer argument for why two people in the same situation respond structurally differently — they are running different induction machines.
Authors and Directors
Herman Melville
Integrative author, Pattern 3. The richest Melville argument is in the tension between author and character: Melville reaches toward what Bartleby cannot hold. Atlas figures: Ahab (Antagonistic), Ishmael (Integrative/Compassionate border), Bartleby (center/border). Queequeg pending. See overlay-literary.
J.R.R. Tolkien
Compassionate author, Pattern 2. Center of gravity with Sam, not Gandalf. His corpus is the Atlas’s single richest multi-quadrant teaching set — all four positions covered from a single author. Full corpus in Tolkien’s Middle-earth Overlay. See overlay-middle-earth.
John Gardner
Integrative author, Pattern 3 (inverted). Gives the Antagonistic figure everything required to escape the position and demonstrates, with grief, that none of it is sufficient. Atlas figures: Grendel (Antagonistic), The Shaper (Compassionate/Integrative threshold), Hrothgar (Self-Restrained). See overlay-literary.
Homer
Integrative, collective tradition. Atlas figures: Odysseus (Integrative, navigational), Penelope (Compassionate, sustained Holding), Telemachus (Compassionate, formation arc), Cyclops (Antagonistic, resistant force). See overlay-literary and overlay-mythology.
Dante
Integrative author, Pattern 2. Writing toward the position rather than from it. Atlas figures: Dante-the-character (arc figure, dark wood to Paradiso), Virgil (axis/psychopomp), Beatrice (Holding pole). Francesca da Rimini pending. See overlay-literary.
Stanley Kubrick
Self-Restrained director. The films are about figures the director watches without being able to join. Atlas figures: Jack Torrance (Antagonistic), Wendy Torrance (unprimed witness), Danny Torrance (interpretive), HAL 9000 (principle-organized Self-Restrained), Dave Bowman (Integrative → unmappable). See overlay-film.
Coen Brothers
Integrative directors, Pattern 2. Ironic distance as the Integrative vantage on Self-Restrained and Antagonistic positions. Atlas figures: Llewyn Davis (Compassionate/Self-Restrained border), Anton Chigurh (Antagonistic, principle-organized), Ed Tom Bell (Self-Restrained, elegiac), The Dude (Integrative). See overlay-film.
Dostoevsky
Antagonistic author, Pattern 3. Most troubled by and most drawn toward the positions his characters occupy. Atlas figures: Raskolnikov (Antagonistic), Prince Myshkin (Compassionate/Integrative border). See overlay-literary.
Works
Moby-Dick
(Melville) Three Atlas figures from one work across three quadrant positions: Ahab (Antagonistic), Ishmael (Integrative/Compassionate border), Bartleby (center/border, adjacent work). The structural argument of the novel: the Antagonistic organizing force consumes everything in its field except the witness who maintains contact without absorption. See overlay-literary.
The Lord of the Rings
(Tolkien) Twelve full Atlas entries, two structural notes, seven confirmed teaching pairs. All four quadrant positions covered. See overlay-middle-earth.
Beowulf
(Anonymous tradition) Four Atlas figures: Beowulf (Integrative, terminal limit), Grendel (Antagonistic, exclusion-driven), The Shaper (Compassionate/Integrative threshold), Hrothgar (Self-Restrained, dignified limitation). First confirmed three-overlay convergence: Grendel’s Cain descent (l. 107) connects Literary, Biblical, and Mythology/Folklore overlays. See overlay-literary.
The Divine Comedy
(Dante) Three Atlas figures as an arc: Dante-the-character begins Threatened and arrives at Holding. Virgil guides to the limit of what he knows. Beatrice operates as a structural attractor beyond that limit. The triad demonstrates the full vertical axis traversal across a single narrative. See overlay-literary.
The Shining
(Kubrick film) Three Atlas figures: Jack Torrance (Antagonistic), Wendy Torrance (unprimed witness), Danny Torrance (interpretive figure). King’s novel version sits closer to the Antagonistic/Self-Restrained border — Kubrick’s Jack arrives already compromised. See overlay-film.
No Country for Old Men
(Coen Brothers film) Teaching pair: Anton Chigurh (Antagonistic, principle-organized) and Ed Tom Bell (Self-Restrained, elegiac). Chigurh is the most precisely rendered principle-organized Antagonistic figure in the Film Overlay. Bell is the witness who cannot metabolize what he sees and retires rather than cross into territory the familiar frameworks cannot equip him for. See overlay-film.
2001: A Space Odyssey
(Kubrick film) Teaching pair: HAL 9000 (principle-organized Self-Restrained at its logical extreme) and Dave Bowman (Integrative origin, moves outside what the instrument can place). The film’s structural argument: the coordinate system has a threshold beyond which the instrument cannot follow. See overlay-film.
Structural Categories
Arc Figure
A figure whose primary structural function is movement across the map rather than inhabitation of a fixed position. Arc figures begin in one quadrant and move through the course of the work. Frodo (Compassionate → Threatened progression), Bilbo (Self-Restrained → return), Dante-the-character (Threatened → Holding traversal), Siddhartha (full quadrant traversal) are confirmed arc figures.
Sustaining Figure
A figure whose primary structural function is holding the arc figure in a condition where the arc can continue. Sam Gamgee is the Atlas’s defining sustaining figure. The sustaining figure does not do the primary work of the arc; they hold the person doing the primary work. Compassionate position at its most structural.
Interpretive Figure
A figure whose primary function is to demonstrate the structural properties of the quadrant they inhabit rather than simply to occupy them. Three confirmed interpretive figure instances: Grendel (Gardner), Anton Chigurh, The Joker (Nolan). Their entries note the interpretive function explicitly alongside the quadrant placement.
Witness Figure
A figure who maintains close contact with an Antagonistic or extreme position without being organized by it. Ishmael is the defining witness figure: orbits Ahab’s obsession, never absorbed into it, survives to tell the story. The witness position is not passive — it requires its own form of Holding capacity.
Unprimed Witness
A witness figure who has not yet developed the framework to name what they are witnessing. Wendy Torrance in The Shining is the defining unprimed witness: she sees what is happening but cannot yet act from a coherent understanding of it. The unprimed witness is a distinct structural category from the fully developed witness.
Border Crossing Figure
A figure who moves across the quadrant boundary, either from Self-Restrained into Antagonistic or back. Boromir (crosses, recognizes, redeems), Éowyn (crosses by structural necessity, returns), Wormtongue (Self-Restrained captured into Antagonistic service) are the three Middle-earth border crossing figures.
Split Figure
A figure whose structural position is not unitary — who holds two positions simultaneously or in alternation. Gollum/Sméagol is the Atlas’s defining split figure: Sméagol (Self-Restrained original self) and Gollum (Antagonistic compulsion as identity) coexist within one figure.
Advisory Layer
The counsel structure immediately surrounding a Holding figure. Antagonistic influence rarely operates on Holding figures directly; it works through the advisory layer, translating Antagonistic interest into the familiar language of counsel, tradition, or caution. When the advisory layer is corrupted, the Holding figure is effectively isolated from accurate information about their situation — and may enact Antagonistic outcomes while believing themselves to be acting from within their own values. Wormtongue is the Atlas’s defining advisory layer figure. See Wormtongue.
Unmappable Figure
A figure who has passed outside the coordinate system rather than occupying a position within it. Tom Bombadil (prior to the categories) and Dave Bowman (post-transformation) are the two confirmed unmappable figures. Structural notes rather than full entries.
Named Clusters
American Self-Limiting Cluster
Willy Loman, Jay Gatsby, Ned Merrill. Three registers of the same structural failure: the American Dream as a Self-Restrained trap. Loman (domestic and vocational register), Gatsby (romantic and social register), Merrill (psychological and embodied register). Teaching pair: Merrill / Gatsby.
Melville Triad
Ahab, Ishmael, Bartleby. Three figures from the same author across three quadrant positions. See overlay-literary.
Dante Triad
Dante-the-character, Virgil, Beatrice. The full Divine Comedy arc rendered as three structural functions: the traversing figure, the guide to the limit, and the attractor beyond the limit. See overlay-literary.
Ithaca Triad
Odysseus, Penelope, Telemachus. Three figures from the same source organized around the same structural situation from different positions: Integrative (Odysseus, navigating), Compassionate (Penelope, sustained Holding), Compassionate/formation arc (Telemachus, becoming). See overlay-literary and overlay-mythology.
